Santa Clarita areas opt to stay unincorporated - POLITICS: Palmdale approves creation of city charter

Residents of unincorporated areas of Santa Clarita Valley voted to stay unincorporated in Tuesday's election, while Palmdale voters approved creating a city charter.

Palmdale Mayor James Ledford also won re-election with nearly 79 percent of the vote over challenger Desmond Kester. Palmdale incumbent council members Tom Lackey and Laura Bettencourt also won re-election, each taking about a quarter of the vote in a six-person field.

In Santa Clarita's nonbinding advisory votes - the equivalent of an opinion poll - Measure A, which called for keeping the communities unincorporated, received 1,622 votes, or 56 percent, the most of any measure.

Measure C, which received 1,567 votes, or 53 percent, called for the annexation of Sunset Point, Stephenson Ranch, Southern Oaks, Westridge, Tesoro, Castaic and Val Verde in the Santa Clarita Valley.
