Lancaster had its most dangerous hitter at-bat.
The Eagles had their fastest runner in scoring position.
And the ball took a favorable bounce in the infield for the Golden League champion.
But that was the extent of Lancaster's good fortune Thursday in a 3-2, 11-inning loss to visiting Santa Clara of Oxnard in the opening round of the Southern Section Div. III softball playoffs.
Shawna Wright reached base with two outs in the bottom of the 11th when Santa Clara second baseman Vanessa Garcia bobbled her ground ball. Lancaster coach Krista Humphreys decided to wave Megan Hutnick around from second, but the tying run was cut down when Garcia recovered and fired the ball to catcher Anissa Lafreniere, who tagged Hutnick for the final out.
