City Section sports on TV facing extinction

Randy Rosenbloom, the veteran play-by-play man on many City Section high school sporting events, has six finals in track and field, swimming, baseball and softball to cover between now and the end ofJune for LA36, the city-run cable access TV station.

That's on top of two all-star football games. After that, when the budget runs out, we'll see. A continued drive to save the fate of channel - which also includes coverage of many other city-related public affairs - should reach new levels of urgency as the July deadline nears for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's budget cuts.

Operating the cable channel costs the city close to a half-million dollars a year, but funding for it comes from cable companies, not taxpayers. Some $300,000 has come from private donations, but not enough to offset production costs   Read Full Article...
