LONG BEACH - John Geyer said it took him three rounds to wake up Tuesday at the Southern Section Masters diving meet.
During the final three rounds, the La Canada junior standout emphatically put his competition to rest.
Trailing by 24 points at the midway point of the competition, Geyer recorded his three highest-scoring dives in the second half - two coming on the 3-meter springboard - to not only capture his first Masters title but set a meet record with 362.80 points at Belmont Plaza.
"(The last three) were on, but not so much the first three rounds," said Geyer, who averaged 8s the final three rounds with his degree of difficulty ranging from 2.6 to 3.1. "It was a different order than I ususally have my dives in at nationals, so I think that had a lot to do with (the slow start)."
