... though not necessarily for the right reason
SOMETIMES Los Angeles leaders do make the right decisions, though not always for the right reasons, or without a little prompting.
Such was the case this week when Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's questionable pick for the city's chief administrative officer dropped out of consideration for the job.
Villaraigosa had tapped former Deputy Mayor Marcus Allen to be the city's top budget officer. Trouble was, Allen was no longer just a rising City Hall star. Since leaving City Hall to become a consultant, he hooked up professionally with longtime L.A. lobbyists Arnie Berghoff and Harvey Englander.
Worse still, Allen asked for a salary $70,000 higher than what the current CAO makes. Considering that the city is in a financial crisis, it seemed as if his first public act was contrary to his future fiduciary duties.
