Even if he were offering to do the job for free, Marcus Allen would be a dubious choice to be Los Angeles' next chief administrative officer. That he wants $290,000 a year for the job - plus as much as $15,000 in bonus pay - should remove him from consideration.
At a time when L.A. faces a staggering $406 million deficit, when city leaders plan to slash services, jack up fees and lay off hundreds of employees, Allen has had the audacity to ask the City Council for $70,000 more than what the outgoing CAO, Karen Sisson, earns.
Were he to get the deal he seeks, Allen would become L.A.'s fourth highest-paid public official, behind only the police chief and the managers of the city's airports and Department of Water and Power.
It's truly incredible that someone aspiring to be the city's top budget wrangler could propose something so self-serving, yet so painfully at odds with the city's interests. But it's easy to see where Allen might have developed such lofty expectations
