Density dichotomy - City puts sensible limits on homeowners, so why not developers?

SO-CALLED McMansions are easy targets for those concerned about intelligent growth in Los Angeles. Not only are the supersize structures quite noticeable, sticking out as they do discordantly from the rest of a neighborhood, but a single homeowner doesn't stand a chance against City Hall.

Still, the Los Angeles City Council took a sensible step to rein in the trend of oversize houses with a modest ordinance Tuesday, given that previously the code had allowed for a house larger than its lot size.

The new ordinance isn't overly restrictive, and even allows for more space if a second floor is smaller than the ground floor. It's a reasonable plan that acknowledges the rights of property owners to expand and modify their homes - but not at the expense of the larger community.
