Climbing the Golden Gate Bridge two days before the San Francisco leg of the Olympic torch relay wasn't the first time Laurel Sutherlin had unfurled the banner "One World, One Dream, Free Tibet."
A year ago, the Bay Area resident and experienced climber was at the expedition base camp on Mount Everest when Chinese officials were conducting trial torch runs up the storied peak. It was April 25, 2007, the day before Beijing officials released the worldwide route for the Olympic flame.
Sutherlin and his crew unveiled their sign - with accompanying translations in Chinese and Tibetan.
"We knew we would be arrested," Sutherlin told me recently, so they transmitted the moment live via satellite equipment.
The climbers were taken into custody with no charge, no legal proceedings, and, said Sutherlin, "they didn't allow us to contact the consulate."
Instead, Chinese authorities interrogated the climbers, who lacked food, water and sleep
