Catching a taxi from downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood should now be as easy as sticking out your arm.
The Los Angeles City Council approved a pilot program Wednesday to ease traffic enforcement in the two urban communities and allow taxi drivers to stop, load and unload passengers in red no-stopping zones.
While it's not illegal to hail a cab in L.A., it is a violation to stop in a red zone and taxi drivers have been reluctant to pick up customers on the street, fearing they will be ticketed.
Instead, most people have had to walk to a hotel or taxi stand to catch a cab.
"It's simple. We are a major metropolitan city and we need to afford our residents the flexibility to access and use every form of transportation option available to them," said Councilwoman Jan Perry, who pushed the six-month pilot project.
"I expect it will work so well that other parts of the city will want to adopt it."
