VALENCIA - Doctors from Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital have donated $2,300 to the Santa Clarita Valley Senior Center so the center can purchase an automated external defibrillator.
On Monday, Dr. Mark Sender, the hospital's chief of staff, presented the check to Brad Berens, the senior center's executive director, at the hospital. The $2,300 also covers a two-year maintenance plan.
An automated external defibrillator is about the size of a laptop and is used to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest. It automatically analyzes the patient's heart rhythm and uses voice prompts to advise the rescuer whether or not a shock is needed to restore a normal heartbeat.
