Jealousy blamed in 4 deaths, fire - Samurai sword, baseball bat found at slaying site

QUARTZ HILL - Upset that his ex-wife was dating her children's tae kwon do instructor, Jae Hwan Shim of Palmdale and an accomplice slashed and beat her to death, along with her two children and a relative late last month, authorities said Tuesday.

The pair then set fire to the home, where investigators found a baseball bat and a samurai sword, although officials have not yet confirmed whether they were the weapons used.

On Tuesday, prosecutors filed capital-murder charges against Shim, 39, and Steve Kwon, 37, of Los Angeles, the alleged accomplice, in the June 23 death of Young Hwa Park, 39, and the three others.

The instructor, Si Young Yoon, is missing and may also be a victim of foul play, officials said.

"It was apparently an abusive relationship," said Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman of the Major Crimes Division.
