LONG BEACH - Shipping volumes through local seaports are expected to remain steady this summer despite a Chinese government crackdown on polluting factories in and around Beijing, experts say.
Fear of backlogs and bottlenecks in the supply chain in the weeks around the Olympic Games has caused concern among some businesses that rely on Asian manufacturers for parts and products.
Retailers fear that an early or late spike in cargo could overwhelm West Coast ports and disrupt the holiday peak shipping season, which typically occurs in August and September.
But port authorities, retailers and trade experts interviewed by the Long Beach Press-Telegram believe that the weak U.S. economy and careful planning by producers and ocean carriers will alleviate fluctuation.
According to one trade consultant, Chinese authorities have already shifted some production to established manufacturing centers outside Beijing
