Lumber-yard fire

put under control

PALMDALE - A fire broke out Thursday afternoon at an old lumber yard in the 40000 block of 16th Street West between Avenues N-4 and N-8.

The fire ignited shortly before 4 p.m. and reportedly set one structure and an outhouse ablaze, fire officials said. Firefighters had the fire under control by 4:50 p.m. No injuries were reported.

Sheriff's deputies dispatched units to provide traffic control, and smoke from the flames could be seen as far away as Elizabeth Lake, about 13 miles away, deputies said.



Alert issued for man who tried to lure kids

LANCASTER - Sheriff's deputies issued an alert Thursday about a man who has tried twice to get youngsters to enter his car and a third time was caught by parents watching a girls' softball game.
