Fire burns near park's famous observatory
A fire burned through three acres of brush near Griffith Park on Thursday, but firefighters appeared to be gaining the upper hand and keeping the flames away from the famed observatory.
No injuries were reported, but about 50 seniors who had taken a tour bus to the observatory were loaded onto the bus and escorted out of the area as a precaution, a fire official said.
"The people who were evacuated were in no immediate danger, and there were no injuries or complaints for medical attention," said Lauren DeRosier of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
The blaze was reported at 3:38 p.m. at 2301 N. Hobart Blvd., just west of the observatory, he said.
The flames were said to be slow- moving because heavy brush in the area burned a year ago, leaving less vegetation to fuel the blaze, DeRosier said.
As of 4:50 p.m., firefighters were working to surround the fire, he said
