Getting an undergraduate degree just got a little more expensive for most California college students, as both public-university systems on Wednesday approved tuition-fee increases at their 33 campuses.
Trustees of the 23-campus California State University system approved a 10 percent fee hike that will take effect this fall. The increase will raise the total undergraduate tuition cost at a CSU campus to $3,048 per year.
Regents of the University of California's 10-campus system also approved a 7.4 percent fee increase that will leave undergraduates paying $7,126 - or $8,000 with various campus fees. The full board will vote on the increase today.
"Certainly some people will feel the impact greatly," said Harry Hellenbrand, Cal State Northridge vice president of academic affairs. "But will it affect enrollment? Probably not."
Hellenbrand said that, historically, declines in enrollment have been more closely linked to federal and state aid packages than tuition increases
