Some cuts by L.A. mayor reversed

Regional libraries will stay open on Sundays. The city attorney will keep his secretaries. And the Recreation and Parks Department can hire more park rangers.

After 50 hours of deliberations, a key Los Angeles City Council committee approved a $7billion budget that reverses many of the controversial service cuts proposed by the mayor but maintains plans to chop more than 700 city jobs and raise fees.

The council's Budget and Finance Committee was able to restore funding and reject the mayor's call to postpone an $81million pension payment until next year after the chief legislative analyst found $97million coming from a legal settlement, a property sale and other funds.

"There is still pain across the board. We restored the bare minimum to the services," said Councilwoman Wendy Greuel.
