Janitors reach pact, union says

Union officials say janitors who work in office buildings in Los Angeles and Orange counties have reached a tentative four-year contract agreement.

Gina Bowers of Service Employees International Union Local 1877 says Monday's agreement will raise average wages by about $1,000 each year of the contract.

Bowers says for the first time the new master contract will cover 6,700 janitors in both Los Angeles and Orange counties. The previous contracts with cleaning contractors expired April 30.

After negotiations broke down last week, union members staged walkouts at about 40 buildings.



Brewer, principal meet at Locke

SOUTH LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Unified School District Superintendent David Brewer III met Monday with the principal of Locke High School, where a melee Friday involved hundreds of students.
