As race nears end, superdelegates stay on the fence

Two of the area's most political officials are so far remaining neutral in the presidential selection process.

Reps. Howard Berman, D-Van Nuys, and Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Los Angeles - both superdelegates - are remaining uncommitted between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.

Both men are linked inexorably to Los Angeles politics, particularly on the Westside and in the Jewish community, where they began their political careers and at one time were considered the political machine for up-and-coming politicians.

A top aide to Berman, who was recently named chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said Berman has been too busy with the job to focus on purely political issues.

"He's turning down 60 meeting requests a day," Chief of Staff Gene Smith said. "He is just ferociously busy doing this job. There are 200 countries here, each with an ambassador who wants to meet with him."
