Calorie-posting on menus mulled

Hoping to get Los Angeles residents to slim down, the county's health director wants fast-food restaurants to post the number of calories for each item on their menus.

A study released by the county's Department of Public Health on Monday found that if 10 percent of restaurant-goers ordered meals with an average reduction of 100 calories per meal, the result would be a 38.9 percent decrease in the annual weight gain in the county's population of those age 5 and older.

"Very small changes can help people eat better and make a huge difference over time," said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, director of public health. "We want people to see the difference between large fries and medium fries.
