Valley meetings a casualty of shortfall

The first and, so far, the only victim of the city of Los Angeles budget cuts is the City Council's monthly meetings at Van Nuys City Hall.

Friday's meeting in the historic building on Sylvan Street will be the last through the fiscal year ending June 30, barring any sudden change of heart.

Glenn Bailey, an Encino homeowner activist, fired off a letter saying the City Council was looking for an excuse to avoid the San Fernando Valley meeting.

"The Valley is 40 percent of the city," Bailey said. "I think the city can afford to meet once a month out here. Unless they want to declare war on the Valley."

Council President Eric Garcetti announced the Friday meeting would be the last through this fiscal year or until there is a sudden influx of money to the city.
