PACOIMA - Most sat quietly, a few cried for their "mamis" and some pouted and refused to move any closer to the big white leather seats and towering trays of shiny metal instruments.
However 5-year-old Anthony Garcia gladly made his way toward the dentist's chair.
The Pacoima Charter preschool student was one of 300 preschoolers who received free oral screenings, fluoride treatments and cleanings at the MEND Dental Clinic Friday for the organization's fourth annual "Give Kids a Smile" event.
The effort is part of a nationwide program, organized by the American Dental Association and local nonprofits, to promote oral hygiene.
The all-day clinic focuses on ensuring that young children from low-income families in the northeast San Fernando Valley lose their fear of the dentist and pick up positive oral hygiene habits
