If 2008 was bad, 2009 was worse for Hazem Attia.
He lost his job as general manager of a failed car dealership in '08. And after fighting for two years to hang on to his Granada Hills home, he lost it last October.
He and his wife, Anna, have a son in college and daughter in high school. They've all been staying with friends and family.
"It had gone from bad to worse - until we got the letter," Attia said Wednesday.
It arrived on New Year's Eve day from Verizon. It was probably a bill, Hazem figured. The last thing he needed.
"I opened it and had to read it twice to understand what they were saying," he said. "I had won a 2010 Prius in a sweepstakes. I've never won anything before."
"There is a God," Attia said to himself. "Maybe 2010 will be our year. I've got to convince myself it's gonna happen."
It's still pretty early, but maybe. Ignoring reports of brake problems involving the popular hybrid, the Attia family was excited to finally get the keys to their new Prius
