Photographer William Claxton dies

Photographer William Claxton, known for his poetic pictures of musicians and movie stars and a longtime fixture in the Los Angeles art world, has died, according to his son. He was 80.

Claxton died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of complications stemming from congestive heart failure, Christopher Claxton said.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, William Claxton started his photography career in 1952 while a student at UCLA.

He quickly became known for his soulful portraits of jazz artists such as Chet Baker and he went on to photograph other musicians such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Tom Jones. His images graced the covers of numerous albums.

He also recorded Hollywood with his camera, taking photographs of celebrities such as Steve McQueen, Frank Sinatra, and Rebecca DeMornay. His photographs regularly appeared in magazines such as Life, Paris Match and Vogue   Read Full Article...
