The Cal State Northridge men's basketball team was the lead story on ESPN's SportsCenter in 2000. It wasn't just a dream, it was a dream season.
CSUN shocked UCLA, 78-74, on Nov. 21 at Pauley Pavilion, giving the university unprecedented advertising. The improbable victory over the Bruins, who were the 15th-ranked team in the country, was one of the most glorious moments in the history of the university. It was a real David-versus-Goliath story.
Later that season, longtime basketball coach Bobby Braswell led the Matadors to their first-ever berth in the NCAA Tournament. CSUN became a recognizable name in office basketball pools across the country, but the dream ended when powerhouse Kansas rocked CSUN 99-75 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in 2001.
In the 50 years since the school was founded, sports teams, coaches and athletic directors at CSUN have had their share of success, struggles and failures but people likely will talk about that magical season for decades
