Anthem Blue Cross, facing a class-action lawsuit for allegedly dropping coverage to people who file expensive medical claims, was accused Friday in court documents of unlawfully offering former customers $1,000 to drop all legal claims against the health insurance company.
Los Angeles City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo said his office filed a motion in Superior Court asking the judge to bar Anthem Blue Cross from contacting any plaintiffs without court permission. A hearing on the matter is scheduled for Nov. 4.
"Blue Cross is putting profits before people, and violating multiple laws in the process," Delgadillo said.
"And regulators are once again unable or unwilling to take action to stop it - so we are. The settlement options ... prey upon the desperation of sick people in these troubled economic times."
Delgadillo filed a $1 billion lawsuit in April against Anthem Blue Cross and its parent company WellPoint Inc
