San Fernando and Santa Clarita will receive state grants for projects making it easier and safer for elementary and middle school students to get to and from school.
The California Department of Transportation announced the grant winners on Thursday. Cities and counties throughout the state will take on 121 projects, thanks to $46million from the federal Safe Routes to School program. L.A. County communities received more than $11 million.
San Fernando received nearly $1 million to install pedestrian-safety features at 18 intersections used by children at public and private schools in the city.
One project will alter the crosswalks to make drivers think their lanes are more narrow.
"There is a psychological component that forces them to slow down," said Daniel Wall, San Fernando's city engineer.
Some intersections also will be getting a digital countdown timer, letting walkers know how many seconds they have to cross the street safely
