Family's slayings provoke disbelief

The Saturday before he destroyed his world, Karthik Rajaram visited the Malibu Hindu Temple nestled in the hills above Calabasas and caught the eye of his longtime friend and spiritual leader, chief priest Narasimha Bhatta.

"He was here. And then just a few days later, he does the unthinkable. He kills his family," Bhatta recalled Tuesday as he struggled to make sense of what he called the worst tragedy ever to befall the Indian community in the San Fernando Valley.

"I knew him for more than 20 years. No one would have thought he was capable of anything like this. Never in all my wildest thoughts. I now wonder: When he came here that last day, was he looking for answers?"

Dressed in his traditional garb with religious face markings, Bhatta shook his head, unable to comprehend how one of his temple's worshippers could kill his wife, three sons and mother-in-law and then turn the murder weapon on himself.
