Jews around the world will gather after sundown today to hear the haunting melody of the Kol Nidre prayer during a service that marks the start of Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish year.
Kol Nidre, which translates to "all vows" in Aramaic, also starts the 25-hour fast that observant Jews undertake as they turn their attention to making amends with God.
"Kol Nidre is, without a doubt, the most attended service of the year," said Rabbi Naomi Levy, the spiritual leader of Nashuva, which she described as "a soulful Jewish community open to all."
"All the rest of the year, we indulge our desires and whims," Levy said, "but on Yom Kippur we are feeding our souls."
Levy will lead Nashuva's Kol Nidre service, which will be streamed live at 6 tonight on JewishTVNetwork.com., a Sherman Oaks-based independent production and distribution company that creates spiritual and secular programming.
