GOLETA - Forest Service officials are warning visitors about possible unexploded World War II weaponry in a remote area of the Los Padres National Forest.
Officials said Monday that the Dry Canyon Area of northern Ventura County was used as an artillery training range during the war.
And they say a recent examination conducted as part of a nationwide survey of former defense sites found fragments of exploded weaponry.
Ranger Tom Kuekes says the presence of the fragments doesn't require closing the area to the public, but that visitors should exercise caution. Kuekes says the Army used the area from 1942 to 1944, inspected it several times from 1945 to 1951, then turned it over to the Forest Service in May 1952. The military will assess the area to determine whether any cleanup is needed.
