NORTH HOLLYWOOD - A 10-week construction project begins Monday to repair pavement along the Orange Line, after the Metropolitan Transportation Authority reached a $1.5 million settlement with its contractor.
More than a year of bickering between Shimmick-Obayashi Joint Venture and Los Angeles County's transportation agency over who was to blame for problems in the line's asphalt was quelled this week after both parties agreed to split the tab.
"We could have spent years arguing, hiring attorneys and fighting in courts. I think both parties still thought they were right," said Rick Thorpe, Metro's chief capital management officer. "But in the interest of getting the project done and finished up, the settlement was reached."
For its $750,000 share, Metro is using money from the project's budget. As part of its $165 million contract with Metro for the Orange Line, Shimmick-Obayashi Joint Venture is not allowed to speak to the press
