VAN NUYS - Ripe ruby strawberries, golden honey and deep-burgundy dahlias were among local products on display Thursday at the first farmers market open in this community for years.
Tucked into a green area by the courthouse, the police station and the library, the market drew a crowd to its sights, including handmade goods, and scents of fresh food being cooked - pleasant surprises to a Van Nuys couple, Sandy and Howard Benjamin.
"This feels like being at a street fair," Howard Benjamin said. "You have flowers, fresh produce, food. ... It is long overdue for this area that needs to be revitalized."
Penny Meyer worked for two years to get a farmers market going in Van Nuys. She knew one that was held Saturdays in the Braude Center's old parking lot had failed about eight years ago, and longtime residents don't remember having one before that
