Following the release of Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's five-year plan to build 20,000 affordable-housing units, the City Council on Wednesday introduced a proposal to require that developers include low-income units in new apartment and condo projects.
The so-called mixed-income housing policy is still in the early development stage and is being worked out by city staffers.
The council proposed and dropped a similar measure several years ago amid opposition by business and homeowners groups.
This time, city leaders said they aim to ensure that single-family homes are protected by directing mixed-income housing to areas that can accommodate greater density.
