EAGLE ROCK - A car crash that killed four teens and left another in critical condition last week was caused not by road rage but an impromptu speed race that stretched for five blocks, police said Thursday.
Cristyn Nicole Cordova, 19, was speeding in her lane on Colorado Boulevard against another car driven by Rostislav Dimittryi Shnayder, 19, on Aug. 27 when his vehicle crashed into her car, forcing it to smash into a tree in the median, Los Angeles police Detective Felix Padilla said.
It does not appear Cordova - who was eight months pregnant - and the four others in the Nissan Maxima knew Shnayder, leaving police still searching for what sparked the race, in which the two cars traveled west at speeds of at least 65 mph in the 35-mph zone.
"It wasn't a formal speed contest where you have a starter and a finish line," Padilla said.
Shnayder is charged with four felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter
