Hard work leads to American dream

The new hospital workers give their boss a look that says they don't quite understand.

How can a guy who looks like he just stepped off the cover of GQ magazine know anything about changing the sheets on a hospital bed, cleaning out bed pans, mopping floors and washing dishes?

How can this guy in a suit relate to them?

The older employees just smile. They already know.

Some people rise to the top while never getting their hands dirty. John Ramirez never had the chance to get his hands clean.

Twenty years ago, he came to this country from Mexico on a green card. His first job was washing dishes at a Sizzler restaurant in the Bay Area. Then he worked 12-hour days as a low-paid hospital housekeeper, cleaning up whatever needed cleaning.
