SANTA CLARITA - The trial of a Santa Clarita man accused of disturbing the peace on a Metrolink train after refusing to sign his monthly train pass is set to begin today in Los Angeles Superior Court.
Robert Arkow, 57, was stopped April 1 by a train conductor checking for passes. A privacy advocate and victim of identity theft, Arkow refused to put his signature on the pass, fearing that identity thieves could use it.
Metrolink requires passengers to sign monthly and some other train passes to prevent riders from handing them off to others who might use them without paying. For what is considered fare evasion, passengers can be ordered to pay $340 fines. Two years ago, the same conductor cited Arkow for not signing his train pass. Metrolink later dropped that charge.
