Plane with blown tire lands

An American Airlines jet carrying 135 people returned safely to Los Angeles International Airport on Tuesday after blowing a tire during takeoff on a flight to Toronto.

The Boeing 737 touched down without incident, a flattened tire visible on the inboard side of its left main landing gear. The outboard tire on the left side appeared normal.

"We commend the pilot for his flawless landing," American Airlines spokesman Tim Wagner said.

The pilot reported the tire problem after taking off around 11 a.m. and asked to return to the airport for an emergency landing, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Ian Gregor said.

Flight 1586, with 130 passengers and five crew members aboard, circled the area to burn off fuel.

Numerous fire engines and ambulances assembled at the airport for the landing, which came about two hours after takeoff.
