FIFTH GEAR: Getting quarter-mile strip in Pomona was half the battle

According to three drag racers who can cover all 50 years of the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, getting to the quarter-mile strip in Pomona was often more stressful than the competition.

Don Garlits, Bob Glidden and Kenny Bernstein were in the sport long before Bernstein introduced the 18-wheel transports that made hauling cars much easier. And they were successful as Garlits won five times, Glidden seven and Bernstein once at the L.A. County Fair.

"Back when we first started, the stress was getting there, not racing the cars," Glidden said. "The racing part was easy.

"I can recall the first trip we made out there, going home over the mountain at Needles, I blew the engine in my truck. So the stress was really in getting there and getting home, not in racing the car."

Glidden was from Indiana, and Garlits came from Florida.
