To the surprise of almost no one, Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak finished second behind Boston's Danny Ainge in voting for NBA executive of the year, which was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
The Sporting News polled general managers and other executives from all 30 teams and Ainge received 18 of the 47 votes. Kupchak had 14votes and New Orleans general manager Jeff Bower had 12 to finish third.
"The fact that I even got a vote is flattering," Kupchak said before the Lakers faced the Utah Jazz in Game 5 of their Western Conference semifinal series. "I'm happy for Danny Ainge. ... It was a gratifying regular season. ... It's tough to look back on a season that's not over yet. I would prefer to withhold judgment until the end of June."
Thanks in large part to Ainge's trade for Kevin Garnett during the offseason, the Celtics underwent a dramatic transformation this season. The Celtics finished atop the overall league standings with a 66-16 record
