GLENDALE - Thousands of eager shoppers sipped champagne from plastic cups and watched water cascade from elaborate fountains Friday to mark the opening of the Americana at Brand - a $400 million luxury, outdoor mall and residential complex that realizes a plan first envisioned by city leaders two decades ago.
As the USC marching band played "Conquest," megadeveloper Rick Caruso, Mayor John Drayman and other city leaders boarded an old-fashioned trolley - one of the mall's quaint Americana features - to break through a red ribbon and usher in what they called a new era for Glendale.
"It's a day that Glendale has not seen in its entire 100-year history and will not see for at least 50 years," said City Councilman Ara Najarian.
Fears of an imminent recession and ongoing layoffs did not seem to bother the hordes of shoppers who hustled off to sample the goods at such stores as Armani Exchange, Stuart Weitzman and H&M following the opening ceremonies
