BURBANK - Burbank police today were warning people who live near open areas to be on the lookout for mountain lions, a day after a big cat was spotted in residential area.

Children and pets should not be left outside by themselves, police said.

A homeowner in the Verdugo foothills photographed a mountain lion in the 1200 block of Verdugo Spring Lane about 2:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

"Mountain lions are typically quiet, solitary animals that avoid people," police said. "Although more mountain lion sightings have been reported recently, it is important that residents practice precautions."

Police asked that all mountain lion sightings be reported by calling 818-238-3000.

City officials provide recorded updates on mountain lion sightings and advice for handling encounters via an informational line at 818-238-3290.

Police advised:

-- Don't feed deer. It is illegal in California to feed deer, and it will attract mountain lions.

-- Trim brush to reduce hiding places for mountain lions.

-- Don't allow pets outside when mountain lions are most active: dawn, dusk, and at night.

-- Bring pet food inside to avoid attracting raccoons, opossums, and other mountain lion prey.

-- Don't leave small children or pets outside unattended   Read Full Article...
