Donovan not gaining popularity among peers with antics

CARSON - Galaxy forward Landon Donovan was named the MLS player of the month with eight goals in five games, but he also might earn an award for most unpopular player following two controversial incidents in recent weeks.

When the Galaxy play tonight at 6 at Real Salt Lake, it will be interesting to see if Donovan continues scoring goals and angering opponents. Two weeks ago, he taunted Houston defender Patrick Ianni after scoring a goal. Last week, he celebrated a goal in front of the Chivas USA bench, which infuriated its coaches.

Perhaps because of his star status, Donovan did not receive a yellow card for either incident. Or for a hand ball that led to a disallowed goal against Chivas.

"It's part of the game," Donovan said. "When people are passionate, things happen. You leave it on the field. Maybe for taunting (I might receive a yellow card), but there was no way I would get a yellow card for celebrating   Read Full Article...
