ON THE DASHBOARD:
Del Taco tostada
THE SPECS: Crispy-fried hand-sized corn tortilla, slow-cooked beans, shredded lettuce, clump of melted cheese.
WHAT'S THE CONCEPT: Bringing back the old school because it's so cool. Although Del Taco is touting its tostada as "new," it used to be on the menu but disappeared some time ago. Now an item on the value menu, it appears that Del Taco is trying to feed the need for nostalgia on the cheap.
DOES IT DELIVER? Del Taco's tag line is "Feed the Beast," but be sure your beast likes beans - a lot of them. Yes, the beans are the main source of sustenance and weight of the dish, but there has got to be a limit to the "musical fruit." And with this much creamy blandness overwhelming your mouth, liberal dousings of Del Taco sauce are needed. The lettuce and cheese have little to no effect on the taste. However, the tortilla was indeed crispy and remained that way longer than expected
