If you didn't think Ryan Carter would play himself into a long-term NHL contract for the Ducks at the beginning of this season, you're not alone.
Carter wasn't expecting it himself. Yet the 24-year-old center so impressed Ducks management in his rookie year that he was rewarded with a three-year contract worth $1.875 million Tuesday.
"I wasn't playing for a three-year contract. I just was playing to make a footprint," Carter said by telephone from his native Minnesota. "In the end, no, I definitely wasn't expecting it."
Carter was due to become a restricted free agent after this season. The new deal calls for him to earn $525,000 in the first year, $625,000 in the second and $725,000 in 2010-11.
