Bennett makes it pay off

MILWAUKEE - Gary Bennett isn't counting on anything.

Sure, Dodgers manager Joe Torre keeps insisting he will rest All-Star catcher Russell Martin more often as the season goes along, the weather gets hotter and the schedule becomes more condensed with fewer off-days.

But former manager Grady Little used to talk a good game when it came to preserving Martin, too. Somehow, Little could never seem to refrain from writing Martin's name on the lineup card.

Bennett, the Dodgers' veteran backup, simply prepares for each game as if he were starting and waits his turn. Thursday, that preparation paid off in a 7-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.

Roughly 15 minutes before game time, Torre learned rookie third baseman Blake DeWitt's balky lower back had stiffened to the point that he couldn't play.
