MILWAUKEE - While Dodgers third baseman Nomar Garciaparra appeared no closer to returning from the disabled list, his replacement, Blake DeWitt, entered Wednesday night's game with the Milwaukee Brewers leading all major-league rookies with a .320 batting average and having injected himself squarely into the middle of the National League Rookie of the Year race.
Not that DeWitt was aware of any of that. Or even cared to be.
"That isn't something I have ever even thought about," DeWitt said. "It has never even crossed my mind. The only thing I'm worried about right now is winning ballgames and getting to the postseason."
DeWitt might get the chance now to help the Dodgers get there. As recently as a week ago, manager Joe Torre reiterated his position that Garciaparra deserves to be in the everyday lineup when he does return because he was beginning to hit when he suffered a strained left calf April 25
