Joe Torre managed the New York Yankees for 12 seasons before coming to the Dodgers, and in 11 of them he appeared to be the toast of Gotham, the former National League Most Valuable Player guiding baseball's most storied franchise to four World Series titles.
Yet it's not quite accurate to say he could do no wrong.
Every so often, Torre would get a terse letter from Major League Baseball's New York headquarters informing him the Yankees were doing something horribly wrong.
And that they were doing it way too slowly.
"This was when they (baseball officials) were going to great lengths to try to speed up the game, and they would always tell us that our games were lasting too long," Torre said. "Well, what did they want us to do? Sure, we were making the other teams change pitchers more often
