The burden of carrying the Dodgers' offense finally got to Rafael Furcal on Tuesday night.
The veteran shortstop, who entered the day as the major-league leader in both hits and runs, was scratched from the starting lineup against the New York Mets because of tightness in his lower back. He initially felt it in the late innings the previous evening and again when he woke up in the morning.
Furcal also missed the Dodgers' final 12 games last season with lower back tightness.
"We don't think it's super bad," Dodgers trainer Stan Conte said. "He had issues with this last year, but this doesn't seem to be that severe of a situation. But you're always concerned with a lower-back problem."
Chin-lung Hu replaced Furcal in the lineup, marking the first time this season any player other than Furcal has started at shortstop for the Dodgers. Hu is a capable backup and widely considered the Dodgers' shortstop of the future, but this still is a big loss for the club
