SPEND it on candy, or save it?

That used to be my childhood plight on the occasions when I came into any spare change. And invariably, I chose to trade my small fortune for goodies from the neighborhood convenience store.

Now that I've grown up and have experienced lean financial times, I've learned that saving money is a lot smarter than giving in to my youthful compulsion - though much less fun.

And because of this tendency, when that $600 federal tax-rebate check shows up in my mailbox sometime in the very near future, my first thought is to sock it away in savings or pay off a bill or two. I feel good just thinking about it.
