July has been fertile box office ground for Will Smith ever since "Independence Day" blew into theaters 12 years ago and transformed him from TV actor-rapper to a major movie star.
He has since scored boffo numbers with summer releases "Men in Black," "Men in Black II," "I, Robot," and "Bad Boys II."
His latest, "Hancock," seems destined to join his list of July blockbusters after opening solidly on Wednesday with $17.3 million in ticket sales. Combined with $6.8 million in Tuesday night preview business, it is already at $24 million.
When all the money is counted, "Hancock" will have delivered some strong numbers. I predict a five-day opening of roughly $100 million.
Smith's appeal has never been stronger as he comes off "I Am Legend," the second-biggest hit of his career. He has eclipsed his close friend, Tom Cruise, as the surest thing in the movie business
