The landmark Sheraton Universal is nearing completion on a $30 million makeover with a modern twist - iPod hookups and wireless Internet access in all 451 rooms, plus a Web-and-cocktail lounge in the lobby.
The lounge and WiFi projects have been wrapped up, while the rooms are scheduled to be complete by mid-summer, hotel officials said Monday.
More than 30,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor meeting space and a more extensive pool renovation are slated for 2009.
While each room houses such high-tech amenities as a 32-inch flat-screen TV and iHome clock-radio, the art-deco design recalls the romance of Hollywood's heyday.
"It's really clean, classy, kind of classic Hollywood," said Ryan Laskey, general manager of the Sheraton, which will mark its 40th anniversary next year.
The Sheraton Universal is located adjacent to Universal Studios and Universal CityWalk, one Metro stop from Hollywood and Highland and in close proximity to the heart of Hollywood.
